Could You Carry Me?

from There Is More Light by Arran Fagan

about

This was the first song on the album. This song was written in a matter of minutes and is the product of a month-long writing practice I undertook during the start of the pandemic in March 2020. Every morning I would wake up early and write for an hour without stopping. I had recently tuned one of my guitars to open D tuning with the G turned down to an F# and was trying to teach myself a Hiss Golden Messenger Song when the chords stumbled out. At the time I felt like a lot of the people in my life, including myself, were going through a lot of uncertainty. Could You Carry Me became my motif for the album. I wanted to explore the fragments of light that can be found in moments of uncertainty, conflict, and loss. What happens when we feel stuck? What happens if we build our world with someone to only have the identity of that relationship change and morph into something unrecognizable? What happens when the world you built is taken away? At some point, one of these things will happen to someone I know. People fall in and out of love, get divorced, stay together to raise a kid, fall back into love, and die suddenly. I wanted to write songs about moving through surviving in that world.

The song was recorded in one take at my parent's house in southern Oregon. I am in no way a good piano player but I wanted to do as much as I could on this album and so I then transposed the guitar chords to the piano using numbered sticky notes placed on the keys.

lyrics

Working through the daylight
hoping to catch a break
This body is an anchor
while my mind floats awake
My love is far away now
In a vast expanse of dream
While lying in these arms
Just as close as she can be
Could you carry me?

The clock's incessant ticking
Contradicting my heart beating
All the words that I've been thinking
Spin round and round and round
My love, she lights a fire
In the depths of what's beneath
To covet beauty and desire
Is something short of cheap
Could you carry me?

There's guilt amongst the unknown
And also fear of those with pride
A question looming and unchanging
Who will be there by your side?
