Gold Flake

from There Is More Light by Arran Fagan

/

about

I wrote this song in the heat of summer on an old-fashioned typewriter. Gold Flake was inspired by two characters in the British detective show Broadchurch. The song was written from the perspective of a couple whose marriage is on the rocks and who aren’t sure what to do with each other. There is nothing easy about falling out of love with someone you have been married to for a long time. Divorces are messy. In the show Broadchurch I felt that the characters were stuck in this limbo of needing to be together or needing to be apart, of being so familiar with one another, loving one another, but not being in love with each other, and not being sure if they are ok with that. There are a lot of songs about being in love or out of love, but I wanted to write a song about the uncertainty of not knowing if the person you built a life with is the same person you fell in love with.

lyrics

You used to tell me that you loved me
When did that stop?
All the years passed by quickly
Slowed down like a top
And all the quiet desperation,
in the letters, you’d write
Don't forget dinner
Please turn off the lights
Finding our love again

And the castle we built
Watched it crumble and fall
We almost felt nothing
But the fire burning out
You said your love was not waning
It was straight out of town
And if it came back you’d tell me
If I was around
Finding our love again

With the riot act read
and the truth on display
We had nothing more to say
You tried holding my hand for comfort
I tried too
I was so in love with you
We didn't know what to do

A golf flake in the water
Loves sacrificial fodder
To try a little harder
Committed or a martyr
Finding our love again
