I was living in Borneo teaching on a Fulbright grant, I was incredibly burned out, and was spending hours listening to John Prine on repeat to decompress. My parents put on John Prine CDs at home in the background while we played board games on Sunday nights, or in the car on long drives, and John Prine’s music was this comfort that reminded me of home. I tried to recreate this feeling by writing my own song in the vein of John.

The mystic mountains veil the passage to my mine
Waiting out the light of day to stumble down and find
The only thing worth seeking, because love will leave you blind
The cure to all my sorrow as old as the end of time

I might buy a castle / I might buy a boat
Drinking through the night and day / Floating on a boat in a moat

The old rock candy mountains will soothe these troubles I’m told
