New Death

from There Is More Light by Arran Fagan

/

about

This song was inspired by the story of a family friend who lost her husband after fifty years of marriage. When she started the process of moving, she wasn’t able to get rid of anything without breaking down—except for the silverware drawer, which was the only thing that didn’t remind her of her husband. I thought this was incredibly touching and had been thinking about it a lot when the song came together

lyrics

I can feel it in the bedsheets
The warmth that once held you
And I know that I am stalling
Hiding from the truth
Cause the only things I'm cleaning out
Are the knives and forks and spoons
It's just that their reflecting
No memories of you

It's in the stillness of these hallways
And the moans that this house makes
I've been begging my own children
And friends to stay
But they have to go back home now
They have jobs and bills to pay
But I wish that you were here
To hold me and keep me safe

And I've got nothing left but memories
Of happiness and dreams
From a lifetime of loving
And this old house now a nightmare though it seems
It didn't mean a thing to me
Cause you were everything a home should be

There's this burden that I carry
Each and every day
And sometimes I think id lift it
If I just threw enough away
There are these nights that burn with anger
At some lie, you used to say
That you were mine forever
But I just watched you float away

And I've got nothing left but memories
Of happiness and dreams
From a lifetime of loving
And this old house now a nightmare though it seems
It didn't mean a thing to me
Cause you were everything a home should be

I now live in the city
With our daughter up the street
That old house kept on haunting
It was driving me crazy
And now I tell you that I love you
In each and every dream
And one day I'll lay beside you
Forever you and me
